Altera's Low-Cost MAX 3000A CPLD Family Now Available in Industrial Temperature Grade

New Industrial-Grade CPLDs Help to Lower System Costs For Temperature-Sensitive Applications

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Altera Corporation , the leading supplier of complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs), today introduced industrial temperature grade versions of the popular, low-cost MAX(R) 3000A device family. With support for every device and package combination, the new MAX 3000A devices enable cost-conscious engineers to reduce system costs for temperature- sensitive applications. The new MAX 3000A industrial-grade devices are specified to be fully functional in the ambient temperature range of -40 degrees C to +85 degrees C, while delivering as much as a 20 percent cost advantage over competing CPLDs.

"Broadband service providers require highly-reliable, low-cost access equipment solutions," said Eric McClatchie, manager of hardware development at UTStarcom. "Our choice of Altera's MAX 3000A industrial-grade devices for the AN-2000 IB IP-based DSLAM product enables us to keep our costs to a minimum and helps ensure that our DSLAM will deliver optimum performance in a wide variety of central or remote office environments."

Since its introduction two years ago, engineers around the world have embraced the MAX 3000A family because the CPLD family delivers a low-cost system solution for a wide variety of applications without compromising ease- of-use.

"Customers focused on temperature-sensitive applications in the industrial and communications markets face the same cost-reduction pressures as everyone else," said Tim Colleran, vice president of product marketing at Altera. "The new MAX 3000A industrial-grade devices are targeted to meet those needs and help customers get to market faster."

In addition to the industrial-grade device offerings, the space-saving 1.0-mm ball-pitch, 256-pin Fineline BGA(R) package will now be offered for the 128- and 256-macrocell density devices. These new product offerings augment the existing MAX 3000A family, thereby increasing the range of offerings available to customers.

"For time-to-market and flexibility, MAX devices provide the best CPLD option," said David Rolerat, lead project engineer at Adaptive Micro Systems. "The new extended temperature MAX 3000A devices will play an important role in many of our upcoming projects."

Software Support

The new industrial-grade devices will be supported in upcoming releases of Altera's Quartus(R) II and MAX+PLUS(R) II design software, both of which provide seamless integration with tools from Mentor Graphics, Synopsys, Synplicity, and other leading EDA vendors. Customers who wish to evaluate the new industrial offerings can contact an Altera sales representative for early software support.

Availability, Packaging, and Pricing

Production quantities of the industrial-grade devices will be available in July 2003 and will be offered in all MAX 3000A packages and densities. High- volume pricing for the EPM3032A industrial-grade device begins at less than $1.00. To sample or purchase MAX 3000A devices, customers can contact their nearest Altera sales representative.
